Caret disappears

K

Kirill Osenkov

Windows XP, Word XP.

Control Panel -> Keyboard -> Cursor blink rate -> None.

With these settings when I hit return to begin a new
paragraph, my caret (AND the mouse pointer!) disappears.
The same thing for typing backspace at the beginning of
every line (inside a paragraph everything works OK, this
behaviour is only to see when moving caret to the
next/previous paragraph).

I have nothing against mouse cursor disappearing (this is
convenient), but disappering CARET drives me crazy! If
this is an erratic behaviour, I would like some feedback
on how soon this will be solved. If this is a FEATURE,
then please tell me how to turn this off...

Thanks.

This happens in Word2k3 on my computer too. It isn't consistent though. It
seems to disappear when there is a spelling or grammar mistake in the
previous line: then when I press Enter the non-flashing cursor disappears
from view. Very weird - but then I always have the cursor blink. I'll see if
I can get this raised as a bug. (I guess it wasn't picked up in beta testing
because virtually everyone uses a blinking cursor!)

Hi Terry,

Thank you so much for your reply, I appreciate it.

The situation is important for me, because it's much better
for me to have the caret not blinking. I agree with you,
there are little people with the caret blink rate = 0 :)
But anyway.

Spelling & Grammar are in my situation constantly off, and
I see this behaviour very often (always, when I press
Return two or more times, although sometimes pressing
Return only once is enough as well).

I hope you'll be able to reproduce the situation and report
it to Microsoft.

Thank you so much once again,
Kirill.

It happens on Word 95 - Word 2003. (Although it doesn't appear to be a
problem in Word 2.0 <g>)

The behavior is consistently reproducible if you use the arrow keys
and attempt to navigate past the beginning/end of the document and if
you press the Home or End key two times. Or if you have paragraphs
separated by empty paragraph marks if you move to the end of a
paragraph, press Backspace, and then the Down arrow key the cursor
will disappear.

Terry,
The million dollar question is...

Bug or Feature?

this is definitely a BUG (and a very annoying one!).

1. Common sense: why would I need to hide my caret? Hiding
cursor is OK, but caret doesn't stand in my way. Moreover,
hiding caret makes me completely helpless - I don't see
the insertion point.

2. Windows UI: each textbox that has focus MUST normally
have the caret visible, to indicate that this textbox is
active (focused) and to show user, which place on the
screen will receive characters when one begins to type at
this very moment.

I hope something will be done about it in future releases
of Office or Service Packs.
