Is there a way to set default categories for new messages and categories? I
tried setting up a rule, but I can't figure out how to set a default. Setting
a category to "Primary" doesn't seem to work, and since I use My Day, there is
no way to set categories when creating tasks there.

IMHO, it seems to me that setting all new messages to a default category
defeats the purpose of a category. The category of the message should be
tied to the person that is receiving the message. You would assign a
category to that contact in the Address Book.

I suggest you read over this article:

Assign a category with a keyboard shortcut (The Entourage Help Blog)
ort.html>

When you create a new task in My Day you have to open it in it's own window
to set the criteria. You select the category there too.
