categories not showing in received mail

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

I am not an Exchange client, I have Entourage installed, it syncs with Mail, but Entourage receives the mail and is the default email client, it is then forwarded to Mail. When mail is received by Entourage, the category of the sender is not displayed. Even if I add the category to the received mail (although the sender is already in my address book), the next email from the same person arrives with the category set at none.

This was not a problem with Entourage 2004.

Ys, I should have said that that is checked.

Is it possible that you have duplicates of the contacts?

M

That's possible, but how would I remove dupes? And why would that cause problems if even the dupes have categories?

It could cause problems if the dupes DON'T have categories and Entourage
found the dupe before the one with the category.

There are scripts on the MVP website (entourage.mvps.org) that can remove
duplicates, but I don't know if they'll identify or remove the one you want
to remove if the contacts have different categories.

I believe there is an AppleScript which can do this for you. How many
are we talking about here?
And why would that cause problems if even the dupes have categories?

It wouldn't - my suspicion is that if you have the same email address
listed multiple times, and one has a category and the other does not,
the results will be unpredictable.

I went through all my contacts, and yes, there were dupes that had no categories. I have winnowed through them and assigned categories to all, and am just waiting for someone in my address book to send me an email to see if it worked. Will let you know, thanks for the help.

I have a few hundred dupes, due to syncing with Mail and MobileMe.

Can you point me to the AppleScript?

I checked out the scripts you pointed me to, they are all for Office X, and I am reluctant to try them on 2008. Any more ideas please

Every contact in my address book has a category, and even so, I just got a couple of emails from people on my list and they show up as "none" under categories in my inbox.

It can't be a question of duplicates, because even the dupes are in a category.

I have all my mail forwarded to my .mac address, where it is picked up by Mail and then on to Mobile Me. The mail that is forwarded from my main Entourage mailbox to my .Mac account in Entourage shows as being sent by mgw, and it shows up in the proper category color.

I suspect this has something to do with syncing, although I only sync calendar events, not contacts.

Help!

They should work, but go ahead and make a backup of your Database before
using them.

I backed up, and then ran the script - it found about twelve dupes (there were many more that I winnowed out manually) but mail still arrives categorized as none, even thought the sender is in my address book and has a category.

Had anyone else had this problem, particularly if you are syncing to Mail?

mail still arrives categorized as none,

Let's test in a new User. Export your Address Book as .rge file. File -->
Export --> Entourage archive (.rge) file. Select only contacts.

Create a new Identity. Enter your account and under the Options tab select
to "leave mail on server."

Set preferences in Entourage to "Automatically match
message categories to senders' categories."

Import the .rge file of your contacts.

Download some messages.

Does it work in the new Identity?

Thank you Diana, I'm afraid it didn't work. I think that I have solved the problem though. My ISP has remained the same, but now processes all mail through Gmail, which I think strips the categories of the senders so that they don't show when I retrieve mail. The odd thing is that I have one friend who is the only person whose category does show when she emails me. No one else shows, just this one, and she uses a gmail address separate from my main one. So go figure!

More puzzlement - today I assigned a category to emails I get from an on-line forum that come through a gmail address I have. The emails arrived with the proper category color. The one person whose emails arrive with the proper category assigned uses a different gmail address I have. I then got an email from another gmail account I have, the email was from someone who is in the address book and has a category. Her email arrived with no category assigned.
Somehow this all points to a gmail problem, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why one account works and another doesn't!

I have no problems with emails received through my gmail account show
categories.

Are you setting your categories to the contacts in the Entourage Address
Book?

If you want to work with me as a consultant, we might be able to figure out
what you are doing wrong. Otherwise, I'm not sure what else we might be able
to accomplish on this newsgroup. You've had 3 people giving you help that
has not worked. I sometimes offer to help users for free off list, but I
don't have the time right now to offer this for free.

Gee Diane, that's really kind of you. I am a contributor to the Apple Discussion Forums and it would never, ever, occur to me to offer my services for pay. I work with posters until their problems are solved, or I have reached the limits of my expertise. I do not ever offer help for pay. I was under the impression that this particular board was a peer-to-peer forum, not a place to troll for paying customers. I am grateful to those who have tried to help me here and hope that someone out there can provide me with a solution.

If you think you can solve my problem if I pay you, but don't have the patience to help me gratis, then I would suggest that you not post here at all.
