Hello.

I've assigned categories to my contacts in my address book and have selected the preference to "Automatically match message categories to senders' categories." But two problems remain:
1) the contact categories are not retained in the address book
2) and those that are don't get "matched" with the messages from the senders.

I hope that makes sense!

Thanks,
Jack

Test in a new User.

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Entourage
there.

ASAIK this has never been reported before. I suspect it might have something
to do with Leopard permissions.

What version Mac OS X are you running?

How did you install Leopard?

There are 3 types of installs:

1. Upgrade Mac OS X (the default upgrade method)*
2. Archive and Install
3. Erase and Install

* Just because it's the default doesn't mean it's the best option.

This page describes what each method does:

Options to Install Leopard
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq_topic/leo_options.html>

My Microsoft User Data folder and all enclosing folders and files:

Owner: diane (shows locked if you need to change click on the lock, change
then lock)
Access: Read & Write
Group: diane
Access: Read only
Other: Read only

Check permissions using Get Info on the database file. Compare it to the
ones you can see.

It should show:

Name: your user name
Privilege: Read & Write

Diane,

Thanks for your help on this. Unfortunately, a NEW problem arose after creating a new system user account:

I lost ALL of the calendar events.

Can you help me on how to retrieve them?

Oh. Now entourage has crashed.

But back to the original problem:

To answer your question I'm running OSX 10.5.2. The computer shipped with Leopard but since then I've done an Erase and Install (and installed a subsequent .2 update).

Following your advice I created a new user and tested the categories without problems.

The permissions on the database are what you have below for both computer users (my default and the new user):

Name: your user name
Privilege: Read & Write

Testing the categories and matching categories in new user and my default account I haven't been able to re-create the problem. It could be the disruption (loss of categories) occurs when I install new software, or something else.

I'll continue to monitor and will report whether it occurs again...and try to find my calendar events...

Thanks again.
