I imported a table from access 2003 into contacts and created for them a new
category. It wont let me put these new contact from this category into a
distribution list, only the original contacts from the original category. How
do I fix that?

Exactly how are you trying to put these names in the DL and what exactly
happens when you try? Do all new contacts have email addresses and if so,
are they resolved? Open a few contacts, double click on the addresses then
save and close - can you add these names now?

from all categories appearing in the "select members" box of the distribution
list. I only want those from the particular category appear...

distribution
list. I only want those from the particular category appear...

You can't filter the Address Book view you see after clicking Select Members.
It contains all contacts with mail or fax addresses. If you have all your
contacts categorized, you shouldn't need a DL. View your Contacts in the By
Category view, select the category's entries and click Actions>New Message to
Contact.
