All of my contacts when viewed in Outlook 2003 have categories associated
with them, but when viewing the contacts in Entourage, all records are
marked as none as the category.

Data is on an Exchange 2003 Server, both the Entourage and Outlook clients
connect to the same mailbox.

Is this by design or should I be looking for something?

Hi Scott!

You've hit the nail on the head. This is "by design".

But I would call it "by design #2".

That is, it's probably not that Microsoft doesn't want to sync
categories ("by design #1") but rather syncing categories hasn't been on
the priority list -- left out "by design" for more important things.

Please be sure to let Microsoft know you'd like to see this feature in
future versions by using the Help --> Send Feedback mechanism in any
Office application. The more who add their voice the more priority it's
likely to get.

Hope this helps!

Thanks For the quick response. I am consistently stunned by Microsoft's
decisions with Entourage. Being a switcher, it looks like they're purposely
crippling the Mac products...

Yes, it would seem that way :-(

This is a strategy that might work. Let me know if it works.

If you export your contacts in Outlook as a tab delimited file, you can open
that file in Excel for Mac and move the category info into one of the custom
fields. Once in Entourage you can add the column "Custom" and sort. Select
all then assign a category in Entourage.
