Dear NG,
please could someone backcheck this:
I had some shortcuts for a pretty long time in the default folder
"Shortcuts" and never used them. Today I attacked this feature and ended
real frustrated. After hours of setting up this part of the navigation pane
carefully and practical for me I wanted to end and closed Outlook. By
restarting it I did not believe my eyes: All my shortcuts were GONE! I tried
it with a few again. Same thing. They lasted until I closed Outlook.
I tried to find out about this issue in newsgroups, with the result, that a
lot of people describe the fault but noone mentions an answer to solve it.
By examinations I found out that the file Outlook.xml was only 7 kb. That
was bigger before when the shortcuts were at their old place. It looked to
me that it was created new after shutting down Outlook, for whatsoever
reason.
Since I am keeping old files for security reasons I copied the former
Outlook.xml into the folder C:\Documents and Settings\usernameApplication
Data\Microsoft\Outlook to see if it could recover the state I had before for
so long. It worked. Now I got suspicious. All my shortcuts were in the
original group "Shortcuts" in the Shortcuts department. But the feature sais
I can create new groups. So I tried it. I was able to add new groups and
then shut down and restarted Outlook. They lasted. Until I tried to rename
the default group "Shortcuts". After a next restart of Outlook all my own
groups were deleted and a "newborn" group "Shortcuts" with the original
files inside (Outlook Today, For follow up and Microsoft Office Online) was
there instead.
By me this is reproducable.
