Caused by Service Pack 3

Service Pack 3 for Office 2003 was installed with a recent automatic update,
and I have been experiencing problems since. My documents are very slow to
load, and I get an error message on random documents stored both on the hard
drive and on my external hard drive, stating that the document cannot be
opened because it is locked for editing by "User", then offering me three
options: 1) Open a Read-Only file, 2) Open the file in another location, then
merge changes later or 3) Wait for the original file to be available. I
purchased Office 2003 Basic Edition with my computer when it was built about
two years ago, and activated it immediately after installing. I have had no
problems until now. Are these problems caused by the new service pack? How do
I resolve them? I followed the instructions on a post for Office 2007
documents being slow to load, and I am not noticing any increase in the speed
of loading. Thanks for any help you can give me!
