CD Doesn't show up in Finder

I just got a copy of Office:mac. When I insert the install CD, it
spins up, but never shows up in Finder.

Any suggestions?

The disk might be damaged. Try another Mac's CD drive first to see if it
works; if it still doesn't work, contact Microsoft, as recommended in this
Knowledge Base article:

<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246/en-us>

Note that if you use Office v.X, you might be out of luck, as that version
is no longer supported by Microsoft.

Thanks for the response. This is Office 2004. I don't have any other
macs to try the CD in unfortunately. I did try it in a PC, and it
registered the disc, but when browsing the disc, it is empty.

I guess I'll have to call the supplemental parts replacement guys (or
else just find a download of this software on the net somewhere and
just use the keys which I bought). Unfortunately I read the advice to
uninstall the Test Drive version of the software before installing the
full version, so I did that, and now I have no Office at all =)

One other thing I'd try first: since you legally own the CD, try to make a
copy of it on your Windows PC and see if that copy works on your Mac. If
there is some damage to the CD that the Mac's optical drive can't read but
the PC's drive can, the problem might not show up with a copy of the
original CD.

Use NeoOffice in the meantime; it's free and should make the time in which
you don't have access to Office less painful:

I'll give this a shot. The PC doesn't see any files on it either
though, (but I don't know if this is common any more or not), though
it is able to mount it (unlike the mac), it just shows up as an
untitled empty volume.

I've never before received a defective disc in an off the shelf
product, I didn't even think of the disc at first; I've been working
on it off and on for most of a week =)

Be sure the drive is working. Try another disk in it to see if it will
mount.

I know when I get DVDs from Netflix some will not mount in one of my drives
but will in the other.

Thanks for the advice, the drive is able to read all other discs, both
cd and dvd without a problem, it's just this one disc that has a
problem.

And to Michel, the copy of the disc behaves like the original.
Doesn't mount in OSX, and shows up as an empty untitled volume in
Windows. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Yeah, sounds like a damaged CD.

Hold it up to a strong light and check for a tiny fly-speck or scratch on
the inside of the data tracks.

The drive is not reading the Volume Table of Contents, which is burned into
the very inside two or three tracks. Because it can't read the VTOC, it
can't read anything else from the disk...

Try polishing the disk with window cleaner and a soft cloth.

Cheers
