Cell border appears on bottom and top of page despite break in row across page

Using Word 2002, SP-2.

I set up a table and then applied a format of horizontal lines at the top
and bottom of all rows.

When my row is allowed to break across pages, I find I get a border at the
bottom of the page as well as the top of the next page, despite the fact
that this may occur mid-way through a paragraph that is in the same row. I
can see why this might sometimes look proper, but in my case it does not.

Is there a way to disable this? I have tried to set that row's borders off,
and turn on borders for the rows above an below this one, but it restores
the borders to the un-selected row too, it seems.
