Cell displays formula not the result of the formula

Doing a simple subtraction. Go to a cell, press = key, click on a cell two places to left, then - (minus) key, click on a cell one place to the left, then click the green check. The cell displays the formula, not the result of the formula.

If I copy the cell then paste special > values only, the correct result shows as a number.

My secretary created this file. Is there some formatting I am missing?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Greg -

Take a look in Excel> Preferences - View, remove the check for Formulas in
the Window Options group.
