Cell format problem

When I sum "auto sum" it shows up as "=sum(A1:D4)" in the cell, rather than display the calculated value. I opened up the format and it shows up as "text", so I change it to "number", but is still displays the formula. I, then deleted the contents of the cell and used "auto sum" again, and it works fine. It appears that when I ask it to change the format of a cell, it does not work until I delete and reenter. I have tried to reformat the specific cell as well as the entire column, and still the same problem. Your suggestions would be appreciated.

One of Excel's features. Just re-formatting does not alter the fact that the
cell was "text".

Select all the cells then Format as General or Number.

Then you must F2 <ENTER> each cell to re-enter the formula.

Aternative.......

Select all the cells and re-format then Edit>Replace

what: =
with: =

Replace all.
