cell format

Why when entering a 12 digit number is the last digit is changed to a "0"
when saving? An example would be entering the number 123456789123 would be
saved as 123456789120. Currently my cell format is general.

In Excel2003, if I enter 123456789123 I get 1.234567E+11 with a cell
formatted to General.
If I format it to Number with 0 decimal places I get 123456789123

Of course, we can only have 15 significant digits because Excel uses the
IEEE convention to store numbers.

best wishes

If your number is a "stock number" or somethine else that you will not have
to do math on later, you can prevent the problem by just pre-formatting the
cells as TEXT, or typing a leading apostrophe before the number which does
the same thing.
