Is there any way of producing a formula for a cell that
not only copies a cells contents from another worksheet
but also its format (i.e. font, fill color, width etc) and
applying this to the cell that contains the formula.

No. Formulas can only return values to the cell. If you
want formats, then you can use conditional formatting, or
purhaps a macro if the three levels of conditional
formatting are not enough.
