cell shading pick a color feature grayed out

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) In the borders and shading pallet under the shading selection, the pick a color option is grayed out and I am only able to choose colors from the limited color tiles displayed. How do I get a broader color selection?

Excel is limited to 40 colors in the color palettes. You can't add to them
but you can select a different assortment in Excel> Preferences> Color.
