cell size in cm?

Hi,

Is it possible to format the cells in an excel sheet so they are 1 cm
squares? I understand the default column width and row height is based
on font size, but can I change this so it is in millimeters or
centimeters?

Thank you for your time!

Well, there's 72 points in an inch, and 25.4mm in an inch so, 1cm =
72*10/25.4 pts = 28.35pts. So if you make your default row height and
cell width 28.35 it should do the trick.

There may be an easier way but I'm not sure.

You can set row-heights directly in pts, but cell width units, prior to
XL04, were in the number of characters in your Standard Font
(specifically, the width of the "0" character in proportional fonts), so
you can't set your column width directly in pts. There are ways to
approximate it, using VBA. Post back if you're interested (or faster,
search the excel group archives:

With XL04, you can set row heights and column widths directly in cm if
you use Page Layout view (and switch your
Preferences/General/Measurement Unit setting to cm, if it's normally set
to inches or mm).

Thanks Peter and JE.

I neglected to say I don't have XL04. I actually used the old
fashioned trial, adjust, trial, etc for a while before I downloaded a
stand alone grid paper program. I was not able to set the row height
to 28.35 either as it would only accept increments of .25 points.

I am surprised there is no direct easy way to set cell size in metric
and/or imperial units. Perhaps it is more difficult to do from a
programming POV than I think or it is not as desirable a feature as I
think.

Thanks again for your time.

It is difficult, but it *is* implemented in XL04. It's not implemented
(yet) in any WinXL version.
