Cell value does not refresh without screen refresh

I have created a workbook in which some cell values do not immediately
"refresh" on the screen when the values in dependent cells are
changed. I have used the word "refresh" here because I don't believe
it is actually a"Calculate Now" does not cause the problem cell to
update. However if the window is simply scrolled to make the problem
cell out of view and then scrolled back, the updated value of the cell
is shown. The formulae of problem cells include nested "If" commands
and references to cells in the active sheet and also to other sheets
in the same workbook. This is not a problem with all cells, only
certain cells.

I just discovered that this same spreadsheet which has given me
problems in the past on numerous occasions including yesterday is NOT
misbehaving this morning. Go figure?

Anyone heard of this problem before?

Sorry for the broken sentence in the previous post. Here is the
corrected version.

I have created a workbook in which some cell values do not immediately
"refresh" on the screen when the values in dependent cells are
changed. I have used the word "refresh" here because I don't believe
it is actually a failure to update the calculated value. For example,
manually forcing a recalculation of the value with "Calculate Now"
does not cause the problem cell to
update. However, if the window is simply scrolled to move the problem
cell out of view and then the window is scrolled back, the correct,
updated value of the cell
is shown. The formulas of problem cells include nested If commands
and references to cells in the active sheet and in other sheets
in the same workbook.

I just discovered that this same spreadsheet which has given me
problems in the past on numerous occasions including yesterday is NOT
misbehaving this morning. Go figure?

What version of XL and OS are you using?

Have you updated Office with the updaters found at

MacTopia Downloads:

Sorry for the slow response.

I'm using OS X 10.3.2 and Excel X with the Office 10.1.5 update (latest).

I haven't seen this problem or heard it reported elsewhere. If it
starts happening again and you can determine what is "special" about
the cells that don't update, please post back.

This shouldn't have any bearing, but are you running any macros or
user defined functions? if so, do they set ScreenUpdating to false?

Thanks for the response. There are no user-defined functions or macros
running. As I said, the problem seemed to go away the day after it
started. Perhaps either a relaunch of Excel, logout/login, or even
computer reboot fixed the problem. I didn't methodically try these as
it never occurred to me at the time that these were the solution to
the problem. You'll probably never hear from me again, at least not on
this problem. :O)
