Cells automaticaly formatting for some reason

If I have some text in a cell and then enter some text in either of the
two cells directly below (it doesn't have to be identical text),
Excell2000 formats the latter with the same background colour and this
is annoying me. I don't know what this is, let alone a way to turn it
off.

Any ideas?
