Cells don't display correct number

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Can't determine why excel suddenly won't display the correct amount in a given cell. Specifically I am trying to enter the amount $1000. The cell is already formatted for currency with no decimal places. I type 1000 into the cell (and I see this value in the formula bar) but when I hit return/enter the amount changes to $10. I've also started to seem some unusual behavior when trying to display percentages as well. HELP????

just tried this out deliberately trying to make it go wrong without any luck.

Any chance you can post the s/s somewhere so I can download and have a look?

Sure - just let me know what you need me to do (not sure I know how to "post the s/s")

No need to post anything :)

Go to Excel> Preferences - Edit, clear the check on "Display this number of
decimal places".
