center text on page

I need to do something simple: have text appear in the center of the
page (vertically) for one page in the document.

Word's help has been remarkably unhelpful. The directions are:
Click the object that you want to align. On the View menu, click
Formatting Palette. Under Size, Rotation, and Ordering, click Align ,
click Align to Page. Click Align again, and then click the alignment
that you want.

However, (1) Under Formatting Palette, there is no heading "Size,
Rotation, and Ordering" and (2) Under "Alignment and Spacing", I can
choose horizontal, line spacing, or orientation. No "align to page"
is present, nor is that choice present elsewhere in the Palette.

So how do I center text on a page?
Thanks.

Word's Help is for an object--e.g., drawing or something, I think, not
for text.

Try this:

Make the page that you want centered its own section--Insert a Next Page
Section Break after it, and before it, unless it is the first page.
Delete any extra paragraph returns you might have added to manually
center it.

Then put the cursor on that page. Go to Format | Document |
Layout--change Vertical Alignment to Center, and set Apply To to "this
section only".

Hi John -

The instructions you were reading pertain to centering an Object (such as a
picture) on a "page". But you're right - Help needs Help:) The current
state of Help within Office 2008 (if that's what you're using) is
deplorable, but MacBU is working diligently to correct the situation "as we
speak". You should start seeing some improvement before long if you have an
active internet connection accessing online Help:)

As to your current dilemma: It isn't *hard* to do, but based on how the
program works it isn't "simple" either. The first thing to accept is that
Word has no concept of a "page" - Word only knows a text flow, and it
expects the flow of that text to be consistent from beginning to end. You
want to make an exception to that flow:)

What you're looking to do is change the Page Setup mid-stream. That's gonna
require the use of a Next Page Section Break (rather than a regular or a
forced page break) both before & after the content you want centered on a
page. Click in that section, go into Page Setup - Layout & change the
Vertical Alignment to Center.

Have a look at the following article - it's PC-Flavored, but pertains
equally to Mac Word:

Hey Bob Jones!
You should hire me to sit down with your developers and have them watch me try to follow the Help instructions. If we can get them to a stage where I can understand them, then anyone can!
