Chaanges to templates will not stick

My Microsoft Word 2003 is giving me trouble.When I set the format to give me the wanted paragraph spacing, make the line justified etc, it works fine, but when I shut down Word and restart again the formatting is lost. I think I do all the right things because when I set the formatting I tick the box to add the formatting to the template. Where am I going wrong? Help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
