Change a column numerical to alphabetical

I have a column of channel numbers and description, a personal TV guide.
It was typed using the tab key and sorted numerical (channel) order. I
am trying to arrange it alphabetical but the channel numbers do not
remain as part of the list and consistently show up as 2 --- 100 etc.
order. How do I accomplish this? Using M$ Word 97. TIA
