Change default bullet in Word 2007

Each time I try to create a bulleted list in a new document, the default
bullet is an empty rectangle, as if it is an unprintable character. I sure
would like to have a simple black dot show up instead. Can anyone tell me
how to change the default bullet in all new documents, present and future?

TIA

Customize the built-in List Bullet style to suit your needs. Then apply that
style whenever you want bullet formatting, for example by pressing
Ctrl+Shift+L. To "turn off numbering," reapply the Normal style by pressing
Ctrl+Shift+N.

Note that in order to change the type of bullet, you can use the Modify
Style dialog box: First apply the style, then right-click its name in the
Styles pane (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S) and choose Modify. Click the Format button,
and then click Numbering. On the Bullets tab, choose the desired bullet (or
click New Bullet to choose something not displayed). When you are done,
click OK. If you want to transfer the modified style to the attached
template, choose "New documents based on this template" before clicking OK
in the Modify Style dialog box.

To change the indentation, right-click a bulleted paragraph and choose
Adjust List Indents. Click OK when you are done. You should then update the
paragraph style by right-clicking again and choosing Styles | Update List
Bullet to Match Selection.
