Change default footnote font setting

My defaul font is 12-pitch. Word automatically sets the footnote font to
10-pitch. I would like to set the default for the "Footnote" style to a
smaller pitch, but it is not available in the "styles" list, nor can I select
all similar.

I do a lot of research papers. I post the URL in the footnote. Today's
URLs tend to be very long, and leaves half a line above as it jumps to the
next line. By reducing the font to 9 or 8, the notes are more presentable.
I also prefer to have them in a different font style.

With the selection in a footnote, is use select Styles and formatting from
the Format menu, the Footnote text style will be available so that you can
modify it.

The Style you're looking for is Footnote Text. Contrary to Doug's
instructions, this style will NOT be listed in the Styles and Formatting
task pane even if you select All Styles, but there are several other ways to
access it:

1. In any version of Word, you can force the Styles dropdown to show all
styles (ALL styles, not just what the S&F pane lists as "All Styles") by
pressing Shift while you click on the arrow beside the box. The only reason
this would be helpful is if you had changed the font of a single footnote
and wanted to update the style by example.

2. If you're using Word 2000 or earlier, you can choose Format | Style, and
select the Footnote Text style, and choose Modify.

3. In Word 2002 or 2003, choose Custom in the S&F task pane, then click
Styles... in the Format Settings dialog and proceed as in (2).

4. In Word 2003 (possibly 2002 as well), right-click in a Footnote Text
paragraph, choose Styles..., and proceed as in (2).

I did NOT say that the style would be listed in the Styles and Formatting
task pane when you select All Style.

I said that with the selection in the text of the footnote, if you select
Styles and Formatting from the Format menu, the Footnote Text style will
appear.

I perhaps should have added that you need to be in Print Layout view.

I'm still not seeing it in the task pane, even with "All styles" selected
(though I do see it in the Styles list), regardless of view.

FWIW, even in Word 97 and Word 2000 you can right-click a Footnote
Text paragraph and choose Style from the context menu to open the
Style dialog box.

<Chagrin>
I totally forgot about the right-click availability as I set up all my S&F
in the S&F menu.
