change font changes entire document not just selected text

Can someone help please? When I highlight a word or 2 of text and click the
font selection box, the font changes. However, if I select an entire
paragraph the entire document changes to the new font, not just the
highlighted text. I can correct this by using CTRL + Z (or undo) once. It's
very annoying however and slows me down. The program didn't used to do
this. I've apparently changed a formatting option or setting in Word by
mistake. How do I stop Word from changing the entire document when I want it
to change the selected text only?

Turn off "automatically update" in the style definitions as
described in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/WholeDocumentReformatted.htm .
