Change in opening Excel??

Would really like to know what I did and how to correct
it...??

When I open Excel now, it opens, but not to a new book,
no to any book. It use to open to a new book. Not sure
what I did, but have looked for a setup for this and
can't find one. Any help would be appreciated.

One way to stop excel from opening with a new book visible is to change the
shortcut that you use to start excel.

If you check your shortcut (rightclick on it and select properties), look to see
if there's a "/e" (w/o the quotes) at the end of the Target box.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the response.

I looked in the Properties of my desktop icon as you
suggest...that's where I normally start Excel from.
Under the "Shortcut" tab the "Target" box is greyed out
with the following in it..."MicroSoft Office 2000
Premium" (w/o the quotes). No "/e" there or in any of
the other options.

What next?

Next guess...

Check to see if there's something in your XLStart folder. Maybe there's a
workbook that doesn't belong. Try moving everything out of there (with excel
closed) and then restart excel to test.

Go to Start>Settings>Folder>Options>File Types. Scroll down to MS Excel
Worksheet. Then if running Win98 OS Edit> select "Open" and Edit.

If using WinXP OS you would scroll down to .XLS then "Advanced">Open>Edit.

In Command line the path should be similar to this....

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\EXCEL.EXE" /e (delete the <sp>/e if
you want Book1 to open.

You must have the double quotes.

Below have "use DDE" checked and this in the DDE message box....[open("%1")]

Application should read "Excel"(no quotes)

Thanks for the input but I've looked everywhere for the
sequence you quoted and can't locate a "Settings" option
from the "Start" button. (I assume you're referring to
the Start button on the left of the task bar.)
Have had a couple of others look at this with your
instructions and we're really in the dark here.

Guess I need a primer on this. I'm using XP and
Excel2000. If you don't mind, could you walk me through
this one more time....cause I'm sure missing something.

One more...

If you upgraded through older versions of excel, you may have more than one
XLStart folder.

You may want to use
Windows start button|search|
and search for XLStart (make sure you search through hidden folders and for
hidden files).

BINGO!!!.....Although I knew this wasn't an upgrade of
Excel, I did the search as you suggested anyway. Turned
up four XLStart folders....one for each user..but the
others don't actually use this machine and those were
empty. However, mine had a personal.xls file in it,
along with four back-up copies. I've been playing with
and trying to learn some Macro code. After deleting all
the back-up copies, Excel now opens with a new Workbook,
as it use to.

Why are you looking for files in the XLSTART folder?

OP is concerned because NO book at all opens when he starts Excel.

Try opening Windows Explorer and Tools>Folder Options>File Types then follow
my first instructions from there.

If you have no Settings on your Start Menu, it is because you have hidden it.

Are you using the XP option or the Clasic Windows?

Are you running TweakUI and have the Settings turned off there?

Do you want to have a blank workbook open when you start Excel?

Do you want it to be virginal or a Template with some customizing done to it?

Hi Gord,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this but was out of
town. You've probably already read what I found and that
Excel now opens with a new book. Actually I didn't really
need this, but was very curious why it happened. I'm
still not sure where all those .bak files came from, but
they're gone and the program works fine.
