Change names in the resource pool

Hi,
I have a live project server which has some 10 projects and 150 resources.
Now due to some changes in the naming convention i want to change the
resource names.
All my resource are assigned some tasks and also have reported progress.
What is the best practise to change the resource name without having any
effects on the current live setup
