How or why is the MS Office Pro 2007 online trial software I downloaded,
saving my .doc documents into .docx, and how will I be able to revert it back
to an original .doc fomat??

Instead of saving it, do a Save As and change the file type to Word 97-2003.

This is the new format for all MS Office '07 main software. There is the
ability to SAVE AS a file that is totally compatible with Office '97-03
format. Simply click the big circle to the upper left of the screen, hover
over Save As and then select Save as Word 97-2003 file.

You can also make each of the Office -07 programs save as the
equivalent -97-03 formats by again clicking the circle, then click Word
(PowerPoint or Excel) Options at the bottom of the window that opens. Then
click Save and then in the drop down menu for Safe files in this format:
choose Word (PowerPoint, Excel) 97-2003 then click OK.

You can also download the compatibility pack from

My trial expired today and now ALL of my documents are locked until I
purchase Office 2007. I do not have the ability to revert the documents
doing a "save as" back to an original .doc format. Is this a trap? I have
some very important work to do today and I cannot access any of my documents
until I purchase? Compatibility mode is installed. HELP!!! I can't even do
a "copy" to put it in a 2003 document.

You can install the MS Office Compatibility pack to allow you to open Word 2007 documents in Word 2003.

Download the Office 2007 Compatibility pack. This will allow Office 2003 to
open docx files....

As I stated in my original message, the Compatibility Pack IS installed. I
even tried to reinstall it this morning and rec'd the message that it was
already installed and could not be reinstalled. Now what?

So are you saying that you have Office 2003 installed, with the 2007
compatibility pack? (Just to be sure...)

Yep... sure do... and every document that I created in 2007 is "locked." I
even tried opening a 2003 document and then copying all of the contents from
the 2007 document into it but it won't even let me do a "copy."

Have you uninstalled the trial version? If not, then it might be a good idea
to uninstall it, uninstall Office 2003, re-boot and re-install Office 2003
along with the compatibility pack.

You surely must mean uninstall the Office 2007 trial version not Office
2003?

No I meant uninstall both to be on the safe side, and re-install 2003.
Unless you don't have your 2003 CD that is...

It sounds like you are still opening the files in Word 2007. To clarify the
steps you are using, are you trying to open the *.docx files in Word 2003?
If not that's what you should be doing. The Compatibility Pack is so
previous versions of Office can open files in the new file format.

Note that you need to use File/Open in Word 2003 instead of double-clicking
the file to open it.
