Change report field list by editing control source

We find that in Access 2007, if we edit the report control source via the
build button to define the query w/in the report, Access does not reflect the
changes in the field list. We are forced to open the Add Existing Fields
list , right click, and choose "edit record source" to make changes to the
underlying query that stick. Suggestions?
