Change report field list by editing control source

In Access 2007 if I edit the underlying query via build on the report record
source property and save changes, the "Add Existing Fields" list does NOT
reflect the query changes. Instead we are forced to right click on the Field
List window and choose Edit Record Source. Changes made via this approach
hold. Why? Suggestions?
