change the numbers of figures automatically

Hello
I am writing my thesis with office xp 2003, I add texts and figures to
my thesis so I always had to change the numbers of figures and
references,
Using of Insert Endnote Now help me a lot for writing references,
because it changes the number of references automatically, is there
something like this for change the numbers of figures?

Hi Somia,

Investigate the Insert | Caption menu. This will insert "Figure 1,
Figure 2," etc such that the numbers can automatically update. Using it
also makes it easier to generate a Table of Figures. If you need more,
try putting "captions" and "table of figures" into Help to get you started.

However, you’ve landed in a MacWord group (not your fault, one of the
web interfaces is *very* badly designed).

So you'd be better off asking follow up questions on the general Word
groups, where you will reach people who are more familiar with Word
2003. Start here:
