change the read only option

For safe keeping I copy the file on a CD.
Each time I need to change this file, I get a error message telling me that
its a read only file...
How can I change the setting, so I don't get this error message @ time?

Before you open the workbook, copy the file from the CD to your harddrive using
windows explorer.

While you're still in Windows Explorer, rightclick on the harddrive file and
choose properties. On the General Tab, you can remove the ReadOnly attribute.

It's better to open the file from your harddrive than from the CD, too.

First of all.......you should never save to or open from removable media
directly.

Save to HDD then copy to the CD. Same when opening. Copy to HDD then open.

The read only bit.......

That is the default behaviour when saving/copying to CD.

All depends upon how the files get "burned" to the CD.

With regular Windows burning, they will always be read-only and you have to
remove the read-only status when you copy back to Hard Drive.

If you were to use a packet writing application like Nero InCD, files would
not be read only and individual files could be erased or written to on the CD
just like a big floppy disk.

I think I wasn’t clear enough the first time or you have misunderstood me.

First I am not opening the file from the CD, its only one for safety.

We never know how often we have to reformat pc with Microsoft Windows XP’s
(like once @ second week L)

Let me give you more info:
The file, which I want to safe keep on a CD, is one from Excel; store on the
HD, to be more precise the drive D.
This file, is already save once on a CD (the safe keep file).

Each time I go back into Excel and make changes into this file, I save it
again on the drive D.

I just can’t re-save it again on the same CD for the safe keep, each time I
make changes into the original one.

Each time I try it, I get an error saying this file is read only.

How do I fixt this error message, or what is the setting do I have to change
into Excel 2000 to make the file a read one?

Any more suggestions anyone?

So it's not the file attribute that's causing the trouble.

ahhh, it's short:

Q. All of a sudden a number of my Excel 2000 files have become "read-only".

A. Clear out c:\windows\temp directory on the machine that houses the files,
then reboot.

Excel stores some files on the windows temp folder. If excel/windows crashes,
some of these files may not be deleted when you close the workbook. And the
next time you open the workbook, excel sees those files in the Windows Temp
folder and assumes that the workbook is already open and in use.
