Changed files dont publish

This happens to me all the time. I change say a PDF and publish but the
changes don't get published. I even remove the hyperlink and replace it with
the new pdf and it still doesn't get published. My publishing options are
set to publish changed pages only.

Any Clue

Not sure what you mean about File Import Media Files, can you elaborate

What Stefan meant was this:

When you change a file, like a PDF, JPG, GIF, etc., which is located in
your FrontPage web, but you use another program to edit it, like Acrobat
or a graphics program, etc., then Front Page has no way of knowing that
it has changed. Even though Windows Explorer shows a revised date, the
Front Page meta data files (in the hidden vti_* folders) does not get
updated.

To get the dates in synch, select the folder where the files should be
located, go to the File menu, select "Import", browse to the files
(which are probably already in the folder you want them to be in),
select the files you've changed, and Click OK. Front page will ask if
you want to overwrite the files already in the folder. Say YES, and
Front Page will update it's meta data. Then when you publish, Front
Page will recognize that the files have changed, and will upload the
revised files.

I actually deleted the old file from the web and saved the new one. To get
it right I had to FTP the server and delete from there then when I published
it was ok. I'll keep in mind what you both told me. thanks again

I'm tired of saving the pdf to a new name recreating the link and publishing
again. I have tried the Import file which works maybe 1 out of 10 times.
Any other ideas. Besides I have to find every place in the web that has this
same pdf link and it's really becoming a pain.

Any ideas??

After you delete and/or replace the file in your local copy, run Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks.

I have tried all the options listed in the article, and I understand that if
I change the file with another peice of software that it does not recognize
the change. so I import and still nothing, recalc and still nothing. the
only thing that works is to save the file with another name and then find all
the link and change them. It's just a pain.

I also have another calendar program that has links to my web, so I have to
remember to change all those links as well.

What happen if you just upload the new file over the old one on the live/remote server?

Yes, I tell it to over write.  Whats odd is that sometimes it works
I met this problem a long time ago. One solution was to drag and drop
the problem files from my local to the remote web directory.
Alternatively (as my web site is fairly small) I'd completely delete
all files in the remote web directory and republish.

Neither is an adequate solution. I just put it down to another
FrontPage bug / quirk.\

(Befoer people claim I was doing something strange let me add that
either I was not or FrontPage does not apparently follow its rather
poorly described rules.)

SOMEONE ELSE SUGGESTED THAT AND i WILL TRY IT.
What would you suggeset other then Fron Page (we are non- profit, not much
budget to work with)

I'm afraid my solution is not popular. I completely dumped front page
and have started programing in HTML, CSS and a little (very little)
Javascript.

My logic is that to use FrontPage you need to know some HTML and CSS
anyway, so why not learn them in the first place? The effort to learn
is a little more than learning to use FrontPage (and doesn't get you
nice looking pages as quickly until you are fairly expert) but it will
teach you techniques of how to best design web pages. It will also
result in pages that if written correctly work on all browsers and
validate. This is impossible for a beginner or intermediate user on
FrontPage.

If you are interested I would recommend the book by HeadStart on HTML
and CSS. Although it is very verbose (and personally I don't like it)
it will give you a good starting point. Used in addition to www.htmldog.com
one can do fairly well.

Usually overwriting AND Recalculate Hyperlinks will fix it...on occasion
though with image files particularly, I'd re-insert them into the design.
