I get this message although I've not changed any settings
and I've rebooted.

"Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password
Authentication. Account: 'getmail.garrett.net ',
Server: 'localhost', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-
ERR login first', Port: 38445, Secure(SSL): No, Server
Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18"

You have an anti-virus or anti-spam product like Norton that is inserting
itself as a proxy between your mail client and the Internet connection and
looks like it's not authenticating properly.

Remove the Email integration, if it's an anti-virus product, since it
doesn't really add any protection if you use the on-access (real-time)
scanner the A/V provides and repair your account settings.
