Changes all text instead of single paragraph

Using Word2003:
When I've selected one paragraph and changes the format (e.g. to bold),
ALL the text in the document changes to the new format. I've never
experienced this before in any version of Word. What is going on?

I'm having the same problem! It has been occurring with Word 2003,
regardless of whether it is on Windows 2000 or Windows XP. When this
occurs, and it could be for an action as simple as selecting a word and
bolding it, the hourglass appears for sometimes MINUTES and then all
the text of the same style takes on the change. I press CTRL+Z, and
the change is on just the item I select. This occurs over and over. I
noticed that sometimes my document that should be less than 1M will
suddenly be 80M or 100M. If I select everything in the document and
copy and paste it into a new document, it appears to remain a normal
size for a little while. I hope someone has some ideas!
