Bob
There are other common causes of this: conflicts with the macros or add-in
templates from Adobe Acrobat (Writer), WinFax, ViaVoice, some OCRs and just
about everything Norton.
If you start Word in Safe Mode using the /a switch and test it again, does
that eliminate the problem? If it is Ok in Safe Mode, then it is a sure sign
that some third party utility has put a macro or add-in into Office that is
incompatible. To get into Safe Mode, use Start, Run and type in
winword /a
and press OK. Word will install itself in its default install condition
bypassing any customisation that may have been added.
