Changes do not transfer from NT to XP

Have just been made aware by our docs control/ compliance people that they
cannot get changes tracked/ created on an NT machine to show up when the file
is opened with an XP box. Is this a known bug, and could someone please
direct me to the workaround /patch if there is one?
