Sorry it this is a FAQ, but I cannot find any reference so far. I recently
moved up from Word 2000 to 2002.

I get reminders _every_ time I close a document about saving the document
template - regardless of whether I have consciously made a change
(autotext, VBA, styles, etc) or not. The same thing happens with the global
template, again every time I close the app.

I want to keep the Options "warn before saving global template" switched
on, because it is a backstop against e.g. saving Autotexts in the wrong
template. I would like to track down what changes Word is making to the
templates and switch them off. Smart Tags?

Chances are that what is causing the problem is an Add-In. I believe the
Adobe and EZ-Photo Add-Ins are known for this behavior. Check your Word
StartUp folder for .dot Add-Ins. With Word closed, try moving them all out
of that folder (if there are any there) and then start and close Word. If
your problem is gone, the source is one or more Add-Ins. Try closing Word
and moving them back into the Start-Up folder one at a time. When you find
the offending one(s) leave it out for now and write to the company that
generated it to complain.

The little I know about Smart Tags makes me doubt they are the source of
your problem nor are they likely to help. (I have them turned off in Word
2003.)

to save Normal.dot are usually caused by add-ins. Prompts to save the
document template (other than Normal.dot) fall somewhere between, and I
don't recall having seen a sensible explanation of those.

document template (other than Normal.dot) fall somewhere between, and I
don't recall having seen a sensible explanation of those.

There is nothing listed under Options -> Templates and Addins, and I can't
see any files listed in the .../Word/Startup folder as listed in the
Options -> File Locations. Is there anywhere else I should be looking?

I don't see any difference whether I answer Yes or No to these prompts.

Thank you Suzanne: I got very hopeful when I found an "East European Fonts
add-in" and a "Web page wizard" but removing them both still leaves me with
updating templates.

Do you have Norton AV? Turn off its Office plug-in.

No Norton, I use AVG. I did not think that this would do anything funny
with Office files, but disabling "heuristic scanning" (which I never really
understood anyway) does not seem to make much difference.

Hmmm. As has already been discussed, this behaviour usually suggests an
errant add-in. How about the Works add-in for Word. Is your Word version
part of Works?

How about the Works add-in for Word. Is your Word version
part of Works?

NHS Select version of Office 2002 SP-2; Win XP Pro Tablet Edition.

Hey: I just cracked it! Thinking of OS matters reminded me of the Tablet PC
pack for Office: uninstalling that has cured the template-editing problems.
I'll leave it uninstalled for now and see if I miss any of the functions.
Odd that it did not show up in any of the add-in places that I looked in.

Is there anywhere to report this behaviour to Microsoft, or are they not
likely to be interested anyway?
