changes to default font not retained in word 2002

i have word 2002 and try to change the default font from the font dialog box
but the changes aren't retained. i have deleted the normal.dot.

the MS KB article, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291291/en-us, doesn't do
the trick.

how to fix this?
