changes to thesis needed, how do I turn off auto format?

When I change the formatting according to my thesis guide book, word throws
out the changes. How do I get word to accept my changes. I have been giving
myself migraines tying to correct this. Help.

Given that we have not seen your 'thesis guide book' nor do we know what
'changes' you are failing to achieve in which version of Word it is going to
be quite difficult to help you without some further explanation. Let's hope
the thesis is somewhat more intelligible
