Changing a Global Template

In Word 2000, when I attempt to make a change in the Word global template
Normal, the Help instructions don't. I've tried every which way, including
Tools, Templates and Add Ins, and none of the approaches works. Someone in
this forum gave me a simple solution some time ago, but I failed to save it.
Please help.
