changing data types for a table in design view

I am working with a large database(30 fields/ 300,000
rows). In design view, I need to change the data type
from "text" to "number", for 9 fields. When I try to save
I receive this error message: "microsoft access can't
change the data type. there isn't enough disk space or
memory". I tried changing the registry value from 9500 to
300,000 at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Jet\3.5
\Engines\Jet 3.5. What am I doing wrong or is there an
easier way to fix.

Export the data, empty the table, change the data types, import the data?
