As you've already discovered there is no Save As option to save a Word
document as an image file - the program is not a graphics app even though it
contains some tools for tampering with graphic objects once they're inserted
and individual graphics can be saved externally in either of several
formats. Creating a PDF (which is actually a print operation) or using one
of the web page formats (.htm or .mht) are about all you have within the
word processing environment. [XML is an option, but there are other
considerations involved.]
If you don't want to use PDF you have the option of using StuffIt or similar
compression software to compress the file before attaching. Depending on
what the recipients need to do with the file my preference would be PDF. If
they need to be able to edit or revise I'd send them both a PDF & a
compressed copy
In the future - if you haven't already found this out - the best way to deal
with images is to tailor them to the necessary specs *before* inserting them
into a doc. Determine whether the final publication will need to be printed
at high quality or simply displayed on screen & adjust the print dimensions,
resolution & file type using a decent graphics app first. If necessary,
create 2 separate copies - one containing higher res copies of the images
for commercial printing & one containing low res copies for electronic
distribution. That helps reduce file size considerably.
You can also keep file size to a minimum by Linking the images rather than
actually embedding them - especially if the images need to be high res for
printing. Just make sure to send the images along with the document when it
goes to the printing concern.
