changing font in slide master

I am selecting all the levels in slidemaster on the first slide and chossing
the font i want but it is only apllying it to the heading.

Which version of PPT are you using? What if you select the placeholder
itself -- you can put your cursor in the text, then press Esc on the
keyboard to select the entire placeholder.
