Changing fonts through Find and Replace while Tracking changes

M

mffventer

I am currently using Word 2000. When I try to change fonts from Normal
to Italic by using Find and Replace while tracking changes are enabled
it does the change but the wrong way around. A line is drawn through
the word with Italic fonts and the Normal fonts are underlined. It
should be the Normal font is crossed and the Italic font underlined.

When I do this without Tracking changes it works fine.

Please help.

And I assume you have checked that it operates correctly if you "manually"
delete and add a word in that document?

This is to eliminate the possibility that, in that document, you have the
"indications" reversed in the Track Changes options dialog. If you had,
Word would indeed underline deletions and strikethrough insertions.

Other than that, I can only suspect a corrupt document.

Word 2000's Track Changes mechanism was nowhere near as sophisticated as
later versions. Formatting changes should not be marked at all. However, a
Find/Replace will indeed do a deletion and an insertion, so the change will
get marked.

Personally, I would not allow more than about 200 individual changes to
accumulate in a Word 2000 document. And certainly not changes from multiple
editors. The mechanism is quite fragile.

I strongly recommend that you "baseline" your original by saving it to a new
file. Then accept ALL changes. Then turn change tracking OFF and go
through and complete your edits. Then use Compare documents to compare the
new version with the original.

This technique marks all changes in a single session from a single reviewer.
The document has a MUCH higher chance of surviving that! If you intend to
use tracked changes a lot, upgrade to Word 2003 or above. They "fixed" the
tracked changes mechanism in that version. If you can afford to wait,
Office 2007 will be FAR more reliable (in all ways, but particularly with
tracked changes).

Cheers
