hi,

I need to work with two fonts in the same paragraph. I have to write a sentence with say normal font of Cambria, but I need to transcribe some words with a font of phonetic symbols. I know that I can program a style with this phonetics font and assign it a shortcut but if I use it the whole paragraph changes to the phonetics font. any ideas how to work around this?

Hi,

the solution is not to use two paragraph styles, but one paragraph style and
one character style. Apply the main paragraph style to set the general font,
then apply the character style only on those words or sentences that need
the phonetics font. If you are not familiar with character styles, check
Word's Help feature, or post back here.

Sounds like you will need to apply the character style often. So further to
Michel's comments: there is a very quick way to apply such styles via
keyboard shortcuts, especially if you add a suffix to the character style
name. For example, I have a character style I've named "comment text,ct".
All I have to do to apply it to selected text is type Command-Shift-s then
ct then hit the Return key.

For details, see the article 'Applying a style via keyboard shortcuts' on
page 117 of some notes on the way I use Word for the Mac, titled "Bend Word
to Your Will", which are available as a free download from the Word MVPs'
website (http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html).

[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

You *may* also find that you'll save even more time initiating this by
dropping in an AutoText entry -- but it depends on the content.
