Changing Footnotes

Word 2002

In a document I want to have footnotes in the following way
"footnote1", "footnote2", "footnote3", "footnote*", "footnote4"

1, 2, 3 and * come from the same paragraph and 4 comes from the next
paragraph up on the next page, not that I'm sure it makes a difference.

Is there a way to put the * footnote in without breaking a section in the
middle of a paragraph?

I did it manually, but I hate to do something manually if there is a way to
do it automatically.

Thanks!

What do you mean by did it manually? And breaking a section?

Word will let you run an AutoNumber series of notes, even as you also use
the occasional note set to a Custom Mark, which is the way I would do it.
(that is, insert footnotes as customary, then when you want a star, simply
set that footnote to Custom Mark instead of AutoNumber). Pages and
paragraphs won't matter, although a section break would make a difference.
