Changing format of cross references

Joel Gilmore

Hi all,

I have a Word document with chapter headings automatically formatted
as "3) Third chapter" for instance.

I'd like to insert references in the text along the lines of, "In
Chapter 3, we look at..." (with Heading 1 format) But when I insert a
Heading number cross reference, it always puts in "In Chapter 3), we
look at..." I want to remove the closing bracket from the cross
reference, but not the actually chapter title/text.

I can of course remove the bracket manually, but it gets replaced when
the field codes are updated.

I've googled to the best of my ability, and can't find anything - does
anyone have any tips?

Many thanks,

Joel

As far as I know, you cannot prevent parentheses from appearing in
cross-references. What you can do is exclude ")" from the number format and
instead type it into your numbered paragraphs. That way, it won't be
included when you cross-reference the paragraph number.

Thanks for the quick response, Stefan. Looks like we'll go with that -
slightly less elegant, but hey, whatever works!

Cheers,

Alternatively, if Joel is willing to type "Chapter" in the text and insert
the cross-reference as just the number, then this could be accomplished
using macropod's technique of adding a numeric picture switch, as described
in http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/CombineXrefs.htm. I think this would
be better than manually adding the parenthesis to the heading, especially if
the paren needs to be followed by a tab character, which would ordinarily be
part of the number format.

Thanks Suzanne! That's a great. Nice to have options - I'll have a
play around with it!
