Changing From address for Electronic Mailmerge

S

Scott Back

I have been tasked by my employer to find out if it is possible to change the From address when using the Electronic Mail option for a mail merge in Word 2000

Issue
The company is using a letter template that they wish to send to multiple addresses but they would like it to come from a specific address rather than the address of the person performing the mail merge

I don't believe that this is (or should be possible) but some parts of management are stating that it is and has been done before and therefore I need 'proof' that it is or isn't possible

Thanks in advanc

"Impossible" is usually pretty hard to prove :)

There is no built-in merge option that lets you specify a different sender.
However, if for example you are using Outlook as your e-mail client, you
could try...:
a. modify the sender's account details before you merge, then change them
back again. You might even be able to do it programmatically, but I do not
know of a way using any of the standard automation libraries. However, the
chances are that if you are also using Exchange server the actual e-mail
address of the sender is quite strongly tied to the user's Windows login.
b. set up more than one mail profile on the sending user's PC, and get them
to log into the correct profile before merging. However, you may find that
this is more difficult to do than I have suggested (Word + multiple mail
profiles does not seem to be a very good combination). You may be able to do
the merge programmatically and use CDO (Collaboration Data Objects) to log
into a profile
c. finding a third party package that, e.g. sends directly using SMTP. It
might not use Word either. I don't know any of these packages although I am
sure they are out there.

Your belief is correct. Though lots of hackers do otherwise. The person
executing the merge would have to log onto the network as the user of the
desired email address.
