Changing graphic to floating shoots it off the page

In Word 2008, if I change an in-line graphic to floating, it shoots off the
page to a position where it disappears from the Layout view. A quick undo and
it's back where it was. I'd rather it simply stay where it is, or at least
close.

It's an easy workaround: When I set it to floating I eyeball the location and
manually key in values for the position I want it to be at, but I'd rather
not have to do that. Is there a way around this?

Controlling floating graphic objects in Word is an art form combined with a
level of scientific knowhow that is very difficult to master :)

The two most important points to be aware of before anything else are that:

A) *all* objects are attached to the text in some way, &
B) there is no page element in the structure of a Word document.

In Line objects are inserted into the text as though they were alphanumeric
characters, while those with Text Wrap applied ('floating') are anchored to
a paragraph -- more precisely, to the beginning of a paragraph.

When you change an In Line object to floating it's typically going to move
because of any number of variables. It won't stay where it is most of the
time because by changing its formatting you've just told it that you no
longer want it there. My guess is that it is simply moving to the preceding
"page" based on where the nearest paragraph starts when you apply the text
wrapping. However, there are a number of variables which can alter that,
many of which you may not recall or never may have been aware in the first
place. Consequently there is no absolute answer to be offered.

What I've found to work best if the format change must be made is to first
drag the In Line image to the beginning of the paragraph nearest to where I
want it to wind up. When you apply the Text Wrap it will typically stay in
pretty much the same location. Even so, factors such as size, proximity to
the edge of the page, etc. may still cause unexpected positioning to occur.
